October 10th is World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues, reducing stigma, advocating, and sharing best practices for prevention and intervention to support mental health globally.

Our Lab team is passionate about contributing to these conversations through education and raising awareness about mental health and wellness online and offline. Therefore, we will be sharing resources and learning opportunities across our social media accounts every hour, on the hour, until 4 PM!

Check out our World Mental Health Day webinars:

New Webinar: "Beyond the Screen: Social Media's Influence on Mental and Physical Well-Being"

Join Olivia Flint, our wonderful placement student and Student Nurse (Year 3) at the Ontario Tech University Faculty of Health Sciences, as she explores the impacts of social media on wellness and how social media's design affects us physiologically and psychologically.

Olivia explains "the physiology behind the scroll," why "perfect posts" are so enticing from a social and evolutionary perspective, signs and symptoms of the mental and physical impacts of social media on children (6-12), teens (13-18) and adults (18+), and strategies to promote holistic wellness.

New Webinar: "Exploring the Double-Edged Nature of Social Media During Student-Athlete Injury Recovery and the Need for Digital Wellness"

In this webinar, graduate student in the Frazer Faculty of Education at Ontario Tech and Lab research team member, Samantha Pereira da Silva, discusses how social media can impact student-athletes (age 14-24) during injury recovery - from being a source of community and inspiration to risks associated with athletic identity and healing.

Strategies, including mindfulness, reducing mental health stigma through open conversations, and digital journalling, are explored to promote wellness and resilience.

New Webinar: "Problematic Technology Use: Understanding Risks, Impacts and Interventions"

This timely topic is brought to you by graduate student in the Frazer Faculty of Education at Ontario Tech and Lab Research Team member, Andrea Harris!

In this webinar, Andrea discusses problematic technology use (PTU) and how we can better understand the risks and impacts of technology on our well-being. She shares signs and symptoms of PTU, risk factors, strategies, and interventions for fostering healthier relationships with our technology.

The Mental Health in the Digital Age Lab team is based across Turtle Island, the traditional lands of many diverse Indigenous Nations and Peoples. We acknowledge and express deep gratitude to the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for and continue to protect the lands, waters and resources on which we live, work, and learn. As a team committed to well-being, equity, and community flourishing, we are dedicated to ongoing learning, unlearning, respect, and action in support of truth and reconciliation. We encourage everyone engaging with our work to learn about the Indigenous territories they are on and consider how they can support Indigenous communities. Click here to learn more.
